Algeria: Launch of the Algiers International Book Fair

The Algiers International Book Fair, suspended for two years for reasons of Coronavirus, resumed its quarters this Thursday in the Algerian capital.

After two years of interruption, due to the Coronavirus disease, the Algiers International Book Fair (SILA) lifted the curtains for the 25th edition, this Thursday, March 24, 2022, in the Algerian capital. The opening ceremony was chaired by the head of the Algerian government, Aïmene Benabderrahmane. The fair takes place over an area of ​​20,000 m2 where more than 300,000 literary and scientific titles will be presented.

Also took part in the launching ceremony which saw the participation of 266 Algerian exhibitors, other members of the government of this North African country, including Soraya Mouloudj, Minister of Culture. The theme of this edition, “The book…bridge of memory”, was a pretext for the head of government to call on Algerian publishers to give more importance to history works and children’s books.

“All of the participating books are recent publications from international and Algerian publishing houses. Priority is given to scientific and university publications, as well as to literary books, which are enjoying great popularity while attaching greater importance to Algerian publications. The religious book is declining compared to the last ten years”, indicated Mohamed Iguerb, curator of the Salon.

The particularity of this year’s edition, which runs until April 1, is that it recorded the record participation of 1,250 exhibitors from 36 countries, with Italy as the guest country of honor.
