With the seizure of its ship Sedrata in Belgium, the Algerian National Navigation Company CNAN-Nord, finds itself without any active ship, reports this Thursday, April 21, 2022, the specialized site Le Marin – Ouest France (paid article).
The last vessel in operation was seized around mid-March by the port authorities of Antwerp, Belgium, for “expiry of the insurance for several days”. The information was given by the daily El Watan on March 13.
All CNAN-Nord ships are at a standstill
With the immobilization of the Sedrata vessel, which followed that inflicted on the Timgad at the level of the same port structure since last September, the shipowner finds itself at a total standstill. Indeed, according to what the site “Le Marin-Ouest France” reported on Thursday, the other ships of the CNAN-Nord fleet are all in Algeria without activity.
Here it should be noted that these are the ships Saoura, Stidia, Kherrata, Constantine, and Tin Ziren. All these ships are usually assigned to a mixed container-conventional line between Northern Europe and Algeria. As a reminder, the Saoura had already been held for two weeks in Brest last fall and the Stidia in Poland during the month of June 2021.
On December 24, the former Minister of Transport, Aïssa Bekkaï, spoke about the management and the difficulties in which the company finds itself. Indeed, it had emphasized, “the change in its management mode, by promoting its performance and by activating its role in the field of maritime transport of goods”.
CNAN-Med, the other Algerian public shipowner, is currently operating normally, with four ships out of the five it has. As for the 5th ship, namely the Gouraya, it is still “waiting in Algeria after being banned for three months by the Paris Memorandum”.
