Algeria won a non-permanent seat on the UN Security Council , for the period 2024-2025, in a vote that took place yesterday in New York. Indeed, Algeria obtained 184 votes out of the total votes of 192 countries at the United Nations General Assembly.
Besides Algeria, Sierra Leone, South Korea, Guyana and Slovenia were elected. And this is the fourth time that Algeria, in the course of its history, has acquired a non-permanent seat on the Security Council, after its accession in 1968-1969, 1988-1989, 2004-2005, and is committed to event of election for the next mandate to contribute to the strengthening of international peace and security, and to strengthen the role of the Security Council in the existing challenges in the Sahel region and the African continent.
Recall that the Algerian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ahmed Attaf, went to New York last week to mobilize support for elections aimed at renewing the non-permanent members of the UN Security Council.
Elected by an overwhelming majority
The Algerian presidency considered that “the election of Algeria as a member of the Security Council in the first round, and by an overwhelming majority by the United Nations General Assembly, as a non-permanent member of the United Nations Security Council, is an appreciation of his pivotal role in his region, and represents a valuable gain that adds to the balance of the country’s foreign policy.
In addition, the Algerian presidency undertook to ensure, during its period of membership, “to make the voice of the Arab and African countries heard, to defend the common strategic interests in the various questions which fall within the competence of the Council of security, and its firm and proactive determination to defend the just causes of these spaces to which it belongs, and to promote all its aspirations and hopes within the Security Council”.
It also pledged to โcontribute to the work of the Security Council, to focus its efforts to strengthen international peace and security, to revitalize renewed multilateral action. While strengthening key partnerships, in addition to promoting the principles and values โโof non-alignment, continue efforts to combat terrorism and strengthen the participation of women and young people in these international effortsโ.
