Algeria in emphatic form at African Rowing Championships

Algeria has dominated the opening day of finals at the African ROWING CHAMPIONSHIPS in Tunis today.

 

The Algerians claimed three out of four senior gold medals with hosts Tunisia also emerging victoriousย at the Tunis Lake International Development Rowing Centre.

Algeria’s first gold of the day arrived in the women’s single sculls as Amina Rouba posted the quickest time of 8 mins 40.15sec

Tunisia’s Nour El Houda Ettaieb took silver in 8:50.79 with Sudan’s Hanaa Ali Mohamed completing the top three way back in 11:11.92.

Oussama Habbiche and Abdennour Zouad doubled Algeria’s gold tally for the day by winning the men’s double sculls.

They posted a time of 6:56.41 to cross the line first, just in front of Tunisian duo Dhia Zoghlami and Nadhir Ben Farhat, who came second in 7:10.67.

Morocco’s Abdesalam Assermouh combined with Achraf El Alami to take bronze in 7:53.43.

A third gold arrived in the women’s double sculls with Algeria’s Rouba and Nawel Chiali taking the title in 7:45.62.

Khadija Krimi and Ettaieb finished second in 7:52.92 with Morocco’s Sarah Fraincat and Kawtar Stify crossing the line in third in 8:20.81.

There was joy for the hosts in the men’s single sculls as Mohamed Taieb posted the fastest time of 7:34.88.

Algeria’s Abderraouf Djouimai clinced second place in 7:40.02 with Morocco’s Oussama Faqir crossing the line third in 8:34.65.

The Championships are due to conclude tomorrow.
