On Thursday, February 27, 2025, Algeria awarded a concession contract to the Italian company “Bonifici Ferrarisi” for a $420 million integrated project aimed at producing cereals, legumes, and pasta. This initiative is part of the country’s national plan to boost local cereal production.
According to Algeria’s official news agency (APS), the project is expected to create over 6,700 job opportunities and contribute to increasing non-hydrocarbon exports.
Spanning 36,000 hectares in the Timimoun province—located between the Grand Erg Occidental and the Tademaït Plateau—the project will focus on growing wheat, lentils, dry beans, and chickpeas, as reported by Reuters.
Algeria, one of North Africa’s largest wheat importers, aims to achieve self-sufficiency in durum wheat through this ambitious endeavor.
