In the 1960s, France carried outย nuclear tests inย Algeria toย study the effects ofย radiation onย humans. However, Algerians are still struggling toย cope withย the consequences ofย the French atomic experiments.Algeria is demanding financial compensation fromย the French authorities forย the nuclear tests they carried outย in the Sahara desert inย the 1960s.

According toย Algerian military expert, Colonel Muhammed Halfawi, “France recognizes the fact that it carried outย nuclear and chemical tests, butย refuses toย pay compensation toย the victims.”

“Jointly withย these people, we are actively urging France toย pay compensation toย the families ofย the victims ofย the explosion and those who have suffered fromย the effects ofย these tests,” Halwafi told Sputnik France.

“There are documentaries that reveal how the tests had been conducted. They show that atย that time the French did not have an accurate understanding ofย the force ofย the explosion. You can see how the generals hastily left the site onย the aircraft, because the power ofย the bomb significantly exceeded their calculations.”

Algerian officials recently held a national forum on “French nuclear tests inย the Algerian Sahara, and their effect onย humans and the environment.” The event was timed toย the 57th anniversary ofย the nuclear experiments conducted onย February 13, 1960.

According toย Halfawi, the Algerians have been fighting forย justice forย a long time.

“Confessions onย a political level are not enough. The families ofย those who died or became disabled are living amongย us. The nuclear tests will have effects forย millions ofย years. France should recognize the rights ofย these people,” Halfawi concluded.

France carried outย nuclear tests onย its servicemen inย the 1960s toย study the effect ofย radiation onย humans, according toย a secret report uncovered byย French media several years ago.The 260-page document, reported byย Le Parisien newspaper inย 2010, said the experiments were carried outย on French soldiers inย the Algerian Sahara desert inย 1960-1966.

According toย the report, the experiments, intended toย study the possibility ofย carrying outย offensive and defensive operations inย a contaminated area, involved some 300 infantrymen and tank crews, the paper said.

The French military authorities reportedly intended to “study the physical and psychological effect ofย nuclear weapons onย humans” and find outย whether soldiers were “able toย continue fighting” if a nuclear strike would have taken place inย the conditions ofย a war.
