Algeria-Cuba: Historical relations, willingness to boost cooperation.

The highest Algerian and Cuban authorities committed to pursuing efforts to develop multifaceted cooperation, particularly in the economic and political fields, as both countries share the same positions on several international issues.

The exchange of visits between the two Heads of State, Abdelaziz Bouteflika and Fidel Castro in 2000 and 2001 reflected the willingness of both countries to strengthen their multifaceted relations.

In this regard, Prime Minister Abdelmalek Sellal will pay an official three-day visit to Havana, starting October 12, at the invitation of the first deputy prime minister of Cuba’s State Council and Council of Ministers, Miguel Diaz-Canel Bermudez, the premier’s office said Tuesday in a statement.

During the visit, meant to step up the traditional friendship relations between the two countries, Sellal and his host will discuss bilateral relations and cooperation in the political, economic and social fields.

The meeting will be an opportunity for the two sides to exchange views on topical, international and regional issues of common interest, the statement underlined.

The solidarity and exemplary nature of ties between the two countries led Cuba’s Head of State Raul Castro to say during a state visit to Algeria in 2009 that “friendship between Algeria and Cuba remains as indestructible as fifty years ago.”

Health sector carves up lion’s share in Algeria-Cuba relations ย

The ties between Algeria and Cuba focus on several fields, namely health, industry, tourism, hydraulics, high education and scientific research, education, sport, ย fishing, agriculture, rural development and culture.

The health sector craves up the lion’s share in Algeria-Cuba cooperation as it constitutes the “driving force” of bilateral cooperation through several partnership agreements, particularly in ophthalmology.

Over 900 Cuban doctors and technicians work in the health field in Algeria, deployed across several provinces of the country, particularly the south.

This cooperation will be broadened to cover the whole country, mainly health mother/child and the fight against cancer.

In last May, the works of the 20th Algerian-Cuban Joint Committee culminated in the signing of a framework agreement on health cooperation and a MoU of cooperation in several fields.

The two parties agreed to update the legal aspects in oncology, nephrology and urology, ophthalmology and maternal and child health, and to develop the prospects of bilateral cooperation in other sectors.

The minister of Foreign Trade and Investment Rodrigo Malmierca Diaz reaffirmed his countryโ€™s availability to strengthen bilateral cooperation in the field of technology transfer and drug manufacturing, adding that he is satisfied โ€œwith the new strategic vision and the fruitful cooperation between, Algeria and Cuba.โ€

Algeria and Cuba pleaded, for several times, for the promotion of economic cooperation in order to hoist them to the level of “excellent” political ties.
