Algeria crash out of Africa Cup of Nations after ill-tempered draw with group winners Senegal

Liverpool’s Sadio Mane was given a rest with his side already qualified but Leicester’s Riyad Mahrez and Islam Slimani could not prevent the Desert Warriors from prematurely ending what has been a disappointing tournament

Islam Slimani’s double was not enough as Algeria lost their cool in an ill-tempered 2-2 draw with Senegal to exit the Africa Cup of Nations.

The Leicester striker’s brace was cancelled out twice; first by Pape Diop and then by Moussa Sow as the Lions of Teranga topped Group B.

Aliou Cisse’s side had already qualified for the knock-out stages and rested Liverpool star Sadio Mane.

Sofiane Hanni’s delightful cross was converted after 10 minutes by Slimani to give Georges Leekens’ side’s hopes of qualifying.

But Diop’s sweetly struck volley from the edge of the area bounced awkwardly in front of Malik Asselah to equalise on the stroke of half time.

With Riyad Mahrez enjoying his best game of the tournament, Slimani’s scrappy finish gave Algeria hope but Sow’s powerful, low finish levelled the game again.

Algeria then lost their cool, seemingly aware of their predicament with Tunisia beating Zimbabwe 4-2, with former Tottenham midfielder Nabil Bentaleb fortunate not be given his marching orders.
