The situation in Niger
The Nigerien Ministry of Defense announced the sad news of the death of 29 soldiers in the west of the country during the jihadist attack. This attack, carried out by more than 100 terrorists using improvised explosive devices and vehicle bombs, deeply shook Niger.
As a sign of mourning and respect for the victims, the authorities in Niamey declared three days of mourning.
It is important to note that Niger had previously accused France of planning a military attack against the country, a subject that requires clarification and in-depth dialogue between the two nations.
The Algerian mediation initiative
Furthermore, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Niger informed Algeria of its acceptance of the Algerian mediation initiative aimed at finding a political solution to the ongoing crisis. The Minister of Foreign Affairs and the National Community in Algiers, Ahmed Attaf, will travel to Niamey to engage in preparatory discussions with the parties concerned.
The Algerian initiative includes six axes, including strengthening the principle of the non-legitimacy of constitutional changes and setting a period of six months to develop and achieve a political solution guaranteeing the return to constitutional and democratic order.
Furthermore, the Algerian initiative is based on the provision of adequate guarantees to all parties to ensure the sustainability of the political solution, as well as on the formulation of political arrangements involving and obtaining the approval of all parties in Niger, without exclude any party whatsoever.
Algerian mediation offers hope for a peaceful resolution of the crisis in Niger, and Algeria remains committed to playing an active role in finding solutions for the well-being of the region.
