Algeria Boosts Its Agricultural Exports

Algeria confirms its ambition to become a major player in the global agricultural market. In 2024, the country recorded record export volumes, with nearly one million tonnes of agricultural products shipped from the port of Oran. This success reflects a renewed dynamism in the agricultural sector, now positioned as a pillar of economic diversification.

According to data provided by the Department of Agricultural Services (DSA) of Oran province, approximately one million tonnes of agricultural products were exported in 2024 to various destinations, including Europe and Asia. Among the flagship products are dates, gluten-free corn, garlic, watermelons, as well as more specialized items like olive pits and carob. These goods were shipped to markets such as Russia, Belgium, the Netherlands, Portugal, Vietnam, and Saudi Arabia.

The Port of Oran as a Logistic Platform for Exports The port of Oran has also established itself as a strategic logistics platform for exports. The modernization of port infrastructure and the strengthening of phytosanitary controls have enabled Algeria to ensure the quality and competitiveness of its products in international markets.

Algeria is not limited to plant products. In 2024, 1,633 tonnes of frozen fish and seafood, valued at $3.22 million, were exported to Portugal, while 1,734 tonnes of wool and 333 tonnes of leather were sent to Turkey. This diversification of products demonstrates the evolution of the country’s production and processing capabilities.

Algeria’s Organic Agriculture Attracts European Consumers Organic and sustainable agriculture represents another strategic opportunity. European consumers, seeking healthy and environmentally friendly products, are particularly fond of items like the renowned Deglet Nour date, a globally famous date, or vegetables grown under Algeria’s unique climatic conditions.

These achievements are part of a clear political will to reduce economic dependence on hydrocarbons. The Algerian government sees agriculture as a driver for growth and job creation, especially in rural areas. Initiatives such as a 50% reduction in air freight costs for exporters aim to further boost exports.

A Key Partner for Global Markets in the Future Despite these successes, challenges remain. Improving logistics infrastructure, modernizing production techniques, among others, are crucial to maintaining this momentum. However, Algeria seems ready to tackle these challenges and consolidate its position on the international agricultural stage.

With a strategy focused on quality and sustainability, Algeria is well-positioned to become an indispensable partner for global markets while harnessing its exceptional agricultural potential.
