Minister of Foreign Affairs and National Community Abroad Ramtane Lamamra said that granting the Zionist entity observer status to the African Union (AU) was an administrative decision that prejudices the unity of the Pan-African organization.
In response to a question on the latest developments related to the AU Commission decision to grant the Zionist entity observer status to the organization, Mr. Lamamra clarified that โthis is a decision which prejudices the unity of the organization and common African action.โ
He further underlined that โthe credibility of the AU cannot be built in international fora by declaring one principle and doing the oppositeโ, alluding to the contradiction between the support of the Pan-African organization for the Palestinian cause and the decision of the President of his Commission to grant observer status to an entity occupying the Palestinian territories.
The statement by the head of the Algerian delegation came at a joint press conference with his Libyan counterpart, Najla Al Manqoush at the end of the work of the meeting of the neighboring countries of Libya.
The minister also added that things were clearer than before, recalling the latest position of the countries of the Southern African Development Community (SADC), which opposed the decision.
Algeria is one of the main supporters of the AU and is concerned about its unity and the unity of Africa, he stressed, recalling in this regard that there are consultations between the countries. Africans around this issue, which “will allow the AU to make a new start on this issue”.
“We sincerely hope that the spirits and the consciences are awakened and that decisions are taken in order to preserve the credibility of Africa and the unity of the AU”, especially as of the friendly countries which have a political weight considerable support entirely the Algerian position.
