During his periodic media interview at the People’s Palace, broadcast Thursday, July 11, Abdelmadjid Tebboune officially announced his intention to run for a second presidential term. He declared that his electoral program would be devoted to completing the achievements and efforts aimed at leading Algeria to its destination.
Call for a new mandate
Abdelmadjid Tebboune affirmed that his decision to run comes โat the request of several political and non-political parties and organizations and youthโ. He expressed his pride for the โimportant achievements accomplishedโ thanks to the support of the Algerian people.
The president defends his record and specifies his future ambitions
The Algerian head of state recalled that his current mandate has been reduced to two and a half years, the first two years having been focused on the fight against the issaba (the mafia) and the repercussions of the COVID-19 pandemic. โAlgerians are today aware that their country is safe,โ he added; he assured that, if he is re-elected, the next stage will be devoted to โanchoring what has been initiatedโ.
People’s sovereignty and reforms
The Algerian president stressed that โthe people are sovereignโ and that they have โthe right to accept or refuseโ his candidacy. He reaffirmed his faith in Algeria’s ability to write history, from a young age.
Election dates to remember
The successful candidates will be announced on July 27 and the Constitutional Council will decide on the appeals on August 3.
Several personalities have already announced their candidacy, including the first secretary of the Front of Socialist Forces (FFS), Youcef Aouchiche, and the president of the Movement of the Society for Peace (MSP), Abdelaali Hassani. Three women are also running for president: Louisa Hanoune, leader of the Workers’ Party (PT), Saida Neghza, businesswoman at the head of an employers’ organization, and Zoubida Assoul, lawyer committed to defending freedoms.
