A major project is underway in Algeria in the Naรขma wilaya: the construction of a paper recycling plant by the Algerian group Gรฉnรฉral Emballage. This strategic and eco-friendly initiative is set to begin soon, with construction scheduled to start on April 24.
Annual Production of 350,000 Tons of Paper
The plant aims to achieve an annual production capacity of 350,000 tons of paper. Operations are expected to commence in 2028, creating around 1,000 direct jobs and 3,000 indirect jobs.
Economically, this project is projected to save the Algerian state approximately $250 million annually by significantly reducing imports of paper pulp. The facility is designed not only to meet domestic demand for corrugated cardboard paper but also to enable exports to international markets. Ramdane Batouche, CEO of Gรฉnรฉral Emballage, emphasized the goal of halting imports entirely while boosting export growth.
Environmental Impact
The environmental aspect is a core focus of this initiative. The plant will enhance the recovery and recycling of cardboard and paper nationwide. Gรฉnรฉral Emballage plans to establish a broad waste recovery network, including the opening of 12 new collection centers by 2028, in addition to the three existing centers in Algiers, Oran, and Sรฉtif. By using 100% locally recycled cardboard as raw material, cohesion the plant will contribute to environmental preservation while meeting market needs.
Summary
In summary, this paper recycling plant marks a significant step forward for Algeria, delivering major economic benefits by cutting import costs and unlocking export potential, alongside a positive environmental impact through enhanced recycling and local waste valorization.
