On Monday, January 6, Transport Minister Said Sayoud disclosed the reasons behind the recent disruptions and delays in Air Algérie’s flight schedules.
During a work visit to Jijel Province, the Transport Minister revealed that 12 aircraft from the national airline’s fleet are currently “out of service.” With a total fleet of 56 aircraft, this means over 20% are either undergoing repairs in Air Algérie’s workshops or grounded due to a lack of spare parts.
To counteract the shortage caused by these grounded or repairing aircraft, Sayoud stated that Air Algérie has chartered six additional planes to meet both domestic and international flight demands.
Air Algérie: Number of Out-of-Service Aircraft
Despite these setbacks, Air Algérie has actually acquired more new aircraft than initially announced following two purchase agreements with Airbus and Boeing in May 2023.
The Transport Minister assured that 2025 will be a year of qualitative transformation in Algerian air transport. He revealed that Air Algérie has not acquired 15, but 16 new aircraft. The airline ordered 8 Boeing 737 Max and 7 large-capacity Airbus models (A330-900 and A350-1000). However, no details were provided about the 16th aircraft. The first deliveries of these new aircraft are expected to start from June 2025.
Additionally, the minister announced plans to expand Jijel Airport to accommodate larger aircraft.
