Excluding the 5.58% change in total nights spent in classified hotels in the Agadir destination, compared to July 2022, this indicator showed a drop of 11.89% compared to July 2019. The month of July is to be forgotten for the hoteliers of the Agadir destination, in terms of tourist performance. While waiting for the statistics for August, a period marked by the concentration of holidays and the period of the great summer rush due to the strong seasonality marking the activity during this month, the analysis of the tourist situation, for July 2023, issued by the Regional Tourism Council (CRT) of Agadir Souss-Massa, showed a drop, especially in comparison with the same period of 2019, the pre-Covid-19 reference year.
In this sense, total arrivals in classified tourist accommodation establishments recorded a drop of 1.72% compared to July 2022 and a more consistent decline of 2.29% compared to July 2019.
Referring to this latest note on the tourist situation for July 2023, it must be noted that this drop in arrivals is above all attributable to national flows which are part of an upward trend compared to July 2019, but down compared to to July 2022. This decline is also attributed to the structural deficit caused by the destination’s outbound markets, in particular the French, German market and other foreign flows which continue to weigh on tourist performance.
National flows: the less efficient market in 2023
As for overnight stays, although the month of July 2023 showed an increase of 5.58% compared to the same period of 2022, this indicator recorded a double-digit decline of 11.89% compared to July 2019. In this sense, cumulative overnight stays increased from 622,545 overnight stays in July 2019 to 519,558 in July 2022 before settling at 458,528 overnight stays in 2023.
This decline compared to 2019 is linked to the drop in the national market which drained 219,795 overnight stays in July 2019 against 240,459 overnight stays in 2022 before falling to 235,219 in July 2023 with a gap of 5,240 national tourists. The observation is the same for the French and German markets, which are still unable to recover their 2019 levels.
In this respect, the French market went from 101,113 overnight stays in July 2019 to 79,356 overnight stays during the same period of 2022 before increasing to 97,551 tourist arrivals in 2023. With regard to German flows, they went from 79,159 tourists in July 2019 to 21,533 in July 2022 before settling at 27,487 tourists in 2023. other periods of previous years.
Market share: Taghazout Bay consolidates its position
By destination, the Taghazout station continues to consolidate its position by capturing 20.39% of arrivals and 21.62% of overnight stays for the Agadir destination during this month, i.e. the reception of 26,017 arrivals and the generation of 118,591 overnight stays against respectively 79.61% and 78.38% of the entire Agadir seaside resort. These are 101,569 arrivals and 429,937 nights who stayed in classified hotels in the city during the month of July.
Regarding the average occupancy rate throughout the destination (Agadir and Taghazout), it recorded in the destination’s classified hotels, during the month of July 2023, an increase of 3.82% compared to 2022 and a decrease of 3.13% compared to 2019. As a result, it fell from 65.27% in July 2019 to 60.89% in 2022 before recovering three points to stand at 63.22% in July 2023.
As regards the share of the main issuing markets in terms of arrivals and overnight stays, it shows a capture of the national market of 55.49% in terms of arrivals and 42.88% in overnight stays of market share against 13 .99% and 17.78% for the French market. Added to this are 9.14% and 14.32% for the English market in addition to 2.59 and 5.01% for the German market.
Moreover, the total for the first seven months shows that the national market is first in terms of arrivals, at 38.94%, while the French market occupies the same position in terms of overnight stays at 26, 10%.
Occupancy: a weighted average rate of 53.32% in 2023
In addition, the cumulative tourist activity during the first 7 months of 2023 shows an increase in terms of arrivals and a decrease in overnight stays. In detail, total arrivals at classified tourist accommodation establishments recorded an increase of 41.03% compared to the same period of 2022 and 3.07% compared to the end of July 2019. This is 645,225 in 2019 against 478,165 in 2022 and 674,351 in 2023.
With regard to the analysis of the cumulative number of overnight stays recorded in classified hotels in the city of Agadir during the same period, it shows an increase in terms of overnight stays of around 57.44% and a drop of 7 .59% compared to the same period of 2019.
In real value, overnight stays increased from 2.98 million during the same period of 2019 to 1.75 million in 2022 before evolving to 2.75 million overnight stays during the first seven months of the year 2023. at the average occupancy rate, it posted in the classified hotels of the city of Agadir, during the first 7 months of the year 2023, an increase of 86.25% compared to 2022 since this period was a year crisis and 0.27% compared to 2019. In this sense, the rate during this same period fell from 53.18% in 2019 to 28.63% in 2022 before settling at 53.32% in 2023.
